I have operated a plant for 30 years, and every year the standardization requirements increase. I appreciate that it makes the job safer, but I also wish it did not mean such frequent inspection and costs for replacement.
It is the same as being a studio musician, in that the newer equipment is helpful but it goes obsolete so fast that sometimes you wish it were still the old days. Standardized equipment definitely keeps me safe though.
