Need a new shower base?

Water damage is not fun. The shower in my apartment has been leaking ominously for months. It started pretty low key, dripping from a single, stained spot onto the floor. Then that single spot got bigger and plaster began falling from the ceiling. My landlords “fixed” the leak, patching up the ceiling and caulking a bit more around the bathtub. Somehow, the “fixed” bathtub sent streams of water falling from the ceiling in thin sheets like a small waterfall.

Now they’re replacing it altogether, and there are more options when purchasing a new shower or shower base than I ever dreamed of.

So, what are the options?

1. Walk in tubs

Installing a walk in bathtub would open up more space for cabinets and linen. And they are noted for their safety and convenience, which would do my bathroom, and its old shower that may have fallen through the floor if I ignored it any longer, a world of good.

2. Deep, Ergonomically Design Tubs

“Soaking tubs” are deep and allow bathers to fully immerse themselves in water. And, if your experiences with your old shower or bathtub are anywhere near as stressful as mine, a hot bath with some salts or bubbles may be just the thing you need.

3. Hot Tubs?

Okay, truth be told, corner tubs are not quite the same as hot tubs. But they do offer just as much room with enough space for at least two people. Sadly, I will not be getting one. The bathroom corners are not free and neither, I imagine, are the corner tubs. My property management company might just veto that particular luxury.

Water damage from leaky shower bases is not the only problem in the bathroom. Dirty or old toilets are, well, gross. The same people replacing your shower can replace your toilet, too.

In 1600, Queen Elizabeth I refused to use her toilet, resembling flush toilets today, because it was too noisy. And you have the freedom to be just as particular.

Pressure assisted toilets keep things cleaner than the standard toilets, so be picky.

Choose from pressure assisted toilets, quiet toilets, or water saving toilets. Whatever you choose, all of the options available may just make you forget about those nasty problems you had before replacing your shower base or toilet.

  1. water damage can be awful so replacing a leaky shower or bathtub ASAP is crucial. i let mine go until some pipe burst in the ceiling and, without renters insurance, there wasn’t much i could do but accept that a lot of my things were ruined

  2. I think one of the last places people think to remodel or make repairs is the bathroom. And that’s strange. Having old bathroom appliances can be embarrassing and unsanitary, and what is one place where guests are bound to go? the bathroom
